Generic Language Study
We are interested in how the language we use to describe social groups might influence children's general understanding of group members. In this study, children (ages 5-10 years) will hear stories about a novel group called “Flurpies.” Some children will hear very generic descriptions about the group (e.g., "Flurpies wake up before the sun rises") while other children will hear more specific descriptions (e.g., "This Flurpie wakes up before the sun rises"). After the stories, we will invite children to share their impressions of the Flurpies. We would like to explore how language may shape children's perception of different social groups.
