Professor Corriveau’s Faculty Profile CV

Professor Corriveau’s research focuses on social and cognitive development in childhood, with a specific focus on how children decide what people and what information are trustworthy.  She is also interested in language and reading development, cross-cultural differences and the role of parenting in children’s social and emotional development.

Ayse is working with Kathleen Corriveau and Paul Harris in a project where they investigate children’s conceptualization of science and religion across different cultures. She is interested in children’s understanding of what is possible and what is impossible and how this understanding is reflected in their counterfactual thinking—the thoughts of “what if” or “if only”.

Niamh Mcloughlin

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Niamh is broadly interested in the impact of social information on young children’s evaluations, learning and behavior. She completed her PhD in Psychology at the University of York, UK, in 2017 which investigated the development of intergroup bias. She is currently working on projects examining parental testimony in the transmission of religious and scientific concepts and the social factors that promote children’s science learning.

Telli Davoodi

Telli works on cross-cultural projects where she collaborates with researchers locally and internationally to study the effects of context and culture on the development of causal reasoning, social essentialism, and moral judgments. At the SLL, she focuses on children's use of causal reasoning in learning about unobservable scientific and religious phenomena.

She is also interested in children's concept of "ownership" in different cultures and how socioeconomic status influences children's and adults' ideas about who deserves what.

Sarah Suárez

Sarah Suárez is a Postdoctoral Associate interested in the development of individual differences in children’s informal learning and critical thinking, particularly in relation to their personal philosophies about the nature and origins of knowledge. She did her master's and doctoral work under the supervision of Dr. Melissa Koenig at the University of Minnesota's Institute of Child Development, and also holds a B.S. in Animal Science from Cornell University. Currently she works on projects concerning how cultural, socioeconomic, and parental factors influence children's unique approaches to learning via testimony, text and exploration.

Ian is a doctoral student in the Applied Human Development Ph.D. program. He is interested in how children decide who to trust, engage in critical thinking, and process important information while learning. Kelly Cui

Kelly is a doctoral student in the Human Development Program. She is broadly interested how children learn from and interact with other people, and how parent-child interaction and cultural context influence this process. Currently she is working on a project linking children’s teaching behavior to their selective learning in both US and China.

 

Ellie Castine

 Ellie is a doctoral student in Counseling Psychology. Her research interests broadly focus on children’s development of critical thinking skills. More specifically, she is interested in the development of race based judgments. Ellie hopes this study will increase our understanding of the ways in which children learn about race and how we can teach in a way that minimizes the development of racial stereotypes.

 

Amanda Haber

Amanda is a doctoral student in the Applied Human Development Ph.D. program. Her research interests broadly focus on how children’s early learning is shaped by their social context, with a strong commitment to developing practical classroom applications. More specfically, Amanda is interested in parent-child interactions, as they relate to early literacy and language development and teacher-child relationships, specifically related to how inquiry-based learning and instruction influences children’s early social and cognitive development.

 

Sona Kumar

Sona is a first year doctoral student in Applied Human Development. She is broadly interested in how children develop an understanding of their social worlds and identities through interactions with parents and teachers. Currently, she is exploring why a gender achievement gap exists in STEM subjects and how stakeholders like parents and teachers can help to minimize this gap.

Annie Leech

Annie graduated from Vanderbilt University's Master's in Elementary Education program and is working as a Research Fellow at the Social Learning Laboratory. She is an elementary teacher with more than 5 years of experience working in primary classrooms in both Nashville, TN and Charleston, SC. Annie is interested in studying how teachers can improve their science instruction by making space for children to demonstrate their curiosity through asking questions.

 

Cory Campbell

coryrc@bu.edu

Cory is a Teacher Fellow at the Social Learning Lab. She is interested in interactions between language and learning. With a master's degree in Communication Disorders, Cory works as specialist teacher and speech-language pathologist at Boston Public Schools during the school year. She hopes to share what she learns from her experience at the Social Learning Lab with her colleagues in order to enhance students' science learning and engagement.

Jenna graduated from St. John’s College, Annapolis, in 2016 with a double major in Philosophy and The History of Math and Science. She is broadly interested in how a child’s social world influences their thinking, learning, and behavior as a child and into adulthood primarily in regard to social categories. She hopes to pursue social cognitive developmental psychology in graduate school.

Shan Wan

Shan is a senior studying psychology and Japanese. Her current research interest focuses on the role of authority and reasoning in children's trust issue. She hopes to pursue PhD in developmental psychology upon graduation and research more about children's imagination. 

 

Cat Baldwin

Cat graduated of St. John’s College, Annapolis, this spring with a double major in the history of math/science and philosophy. She is interested in social science generally, but is especially interested in group dynamics in harsh environments. She hopes to attend graduate school in the future.

Isabelle is a rising senior at Concord Academy. Her primary interests are in social behavior, foreign languages, english, and cognitive science. 

 

Pelin Tozan

Pelin is a junior at Boston University studying psychology. She is from Istanbul, Turkey but hopes to continue her work on cognition and neurobiology in the States.

 

Kylee Hegarty

Kylee is a junior in the College of Communications minoring in Psychology. She has spent a significant amount of time working with children, and has a passion for their growth and development. After undergrad, she hopes to go on to graduate school to study Clinical-Developmental Psychology.

 

Ryan Gildersleeve

Ryan is a sophomore studying Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is especially interested in social and developmental psychology and has always enjoyed working with kids — she is excited at the opportunity to combine both of these interests as an RA in the SLL!

 

Leah Mekler

Leah is a senior in the College of Arts and Science majoring in Psychology. After graduation, she hopes to pursue her masters degree in psychology. At the Social Learning Lab, Leah hopes to learn more about the importance of doing research to learn more about people and their behaviors.

 

Petal Samrow

Petal is a sophomore studying neuroscience and psychology on the premed track. She loves to work with children and upon graduation hopes to attend medical school to pursue a career as a pediatric neurologist.

 
 

Sam Barbero

Sam is an undergraduate student majoring in Psychology. She is incredibly excited to be able to participate in research that contributes to helping people better understand themselves and the world around them. She is especially interested in how early childhood experiences and parental interactions effect children as they develop, and cannot wait to be a part of all the exciting research happening in the Social Learning Lab.

 

Chloe Yang

Chloe is a senior student studying Psychology and Japanese. She has a broad research interest ranging from the gender difference of expression categorization to immersive learning using VR and AR. After graduation, she hopes to pursue master degree in cognitive psychology.

Yasmin recently graduated from Boston University with a major in psychology and minor in biology. She plans to continue her studies into graduate school within the field of clinical psychology.
